Ormat Celebrates Major Milestones in Energy Storage

Ribbon cutting ceremonies for new Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in New Jersey and Ohio.

We recently held ribbon-cutting ceremonies to celebrate major milestones - the commissioning of two new state-of-the-art Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Howell, New Jersey, and Bowling Green, Ohio.

In Howell, a crowd gathered on a sunny Thursday morning to commemorate the completion of a 7MW BESS that has been providing vital frequency regulation services to PJM Interconnection's regional grid since April 2023. The project supports New Jersey's ambitious energy storage goals under the 2018 Clean Energy Act and is aligned with the state's vision of transitioning to 100% clean energy by 2050.

Distinguished guests in attendance included Deputy Mayor Ian Nadel, Planning Board member Brian Tannenhaus, representatives from Ormat Technologies, as well as project partners Cullen and Dykman LLP, Engineering & amp; Land Planning Associates, and Miller Brothers. In his remarks, Deputy Mayor Nadel emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving the township's sustainability objectives. "This BESS will benefit our community by stabilizing the electric grid, improving reliability, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the region," he said.

The 7MW/7MWh lithium-ion battery system will provide essential grid services while supporting Howell Township's efforts to meet renewable energy targets. By storing and dispatching electricity during periods of peak demand, the BESS helps balance supply and demand on the grid while enabling further renewable energy integration.

Just weeks later, Ormat Technologies celebrated another achievement – the commissioning of a 12MW BESS in Bowling Green, Ohio. Local officials, including Mayor Mike Aspacher and Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce members, gathered as the company celebrated this achievement.

The Bowling Green BESS provides peak-load reduction services to Bowling Green Municipal Utilities as well as frequency regulation for PJM Interconnection. The advanced lithium-ion battery storage system has been delivering reliable, efficient energy solutions to Ormat's clients since May 2023.

In his remarks, Mayor Aspacher commended Ormat for their innovative approach and commitment to sustainability. "This project is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together to deploy the latest technology while reducing our environmental impact," he said.

The two new BESS projects demonstrate Ormat Technologies' continued leadership and expertise in providing cutting-edge energy storage solutions. As the company partners with more communities and utilities across the country, they are enabling the necessary transition to a cleaner, more resilient electric grid powered by renewable energy. Through these major milestones, Ormat celebrates the future of energy storage and its critical role in building a sustainable future.
