Power Studies Engineer - Arc Flash

Location: Reno, NV

Position Summary

The Power Studies Engineer will use ETAP software in order to build electrical models of geothermal and/or solar facilities and perform System studies including Arc Flash, Short Circuit, Protection Coordination, and an evaluation of compliance with relevant safety standards. The Engineer will prepare written reports of the evaluation including recommendations to correct any deficiencies.

Essential Functions

  • Build detailed electrical models of Ormat geothermal and solar power plants using ETAP software.
  • Perform power system studies including short circuit, protection coordination, and arc flash at both new and operating facilities.
  • Evaluate the electrical design to ensure it is compliant with all applicable safety standards such as the National Electric Code.
  • Analyze results of system studies and prepare written reports.
  • Create/Install arc flash labeling per NFPA 70E
  • Strictly adhere to and enforce safety procedures as required by ORMAT, CAPP, and OSHA.
  • Must possess at any time a valid driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to Ormat auto insurance carrier.
  • Must be able to travel extensively to Power Plant locations, including rural US and/or international locations to gather field data and post arc flash labels after completion of study.

Education, Experience, and Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university. Professional Engineer license a plus.
  • 5+ years of experience in Power System Studies with a focus on arc flash studies.
  • Must have a high degree of initiative, ability to work with minimal supervision and a high level of confidentiality.
  • Experience using electrical system modeling software (ETAP preferred).
  • Ability to understand electrical single lines, three-lines, and schematics.
  • Ability to understand manufacturer design/testing information to model generators, transformers, PV modules, and batteries in ETAP.
  • Ability to connect to a variety of microprocessor-based relays and interpret the settings to incorporate into the ETAP model.
  • Ability to interpret Time Current Characteristic (TCC) curves and/or create curves from manufacturers data.
  • Experience with AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70E: Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, and IEEE 1584: Guide for Performing Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects.
  • Must have strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have the ability to read, write and speak English at a level that will permit the employee to understand and communicate information in a manner that will enable the employee to safely and efficiently perform the job duties.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving record acceptable to ORMAT's auto insurance carrier.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to work in plant operating areas including exposure to noise, vibrations, heat and cold.
  • Must be able to wear any required protective equipment, as required by safety procedures and regulations.
  • Job requires sitting and/or standing for long periods of time with moderate bending, stooping, and kneeling.
  • The ability to work at a computer and computer monitor and use repetitive motion for long periods of time.
  • The ability to safely operate 4WD light vehicles on highways and dirt roads.
